Talking, laughing, smiling, and eating – these are things we take for granted in our day-to-day lives, but what happens when your jaw no longer functions properly? Let’s just say life wouldn’t be so much fun anymore.

Unfortunately, this is the reality for more than 10 million people in the U.S. who live with jaw pain and dysfunction. TMJ or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders can lead to symptoms ranging from discomfort or tension to severe pain.
The good news is that acupuncture for jaw pain can be an effective treatment option not only for the pain itself but also the for any underlying issues that may lead to flare-ups.
At templ™, we alleviate the painful effects of TMJ and jaw pain through personalized acupuncture and Chinese herbal treatments that leave you feeling much better.

The TMJ is a complex joint that functions like a sliding hinge and connects the jawbone to the skull on both sides of your head. It enables your jaw to move up and down, side to side, and forward and back. When the bones, muscles, ligaments, discs, or nerves involved in the joint’s normal functioning fail to work, you’re likely to experience pain while chewing, talking, or laughing. TMJ disorder can be the result of a jaw injury, arthritis, genetics, or bruxism – the unintentional clenching and grinding of the teeth, usually during sleep.
Some of the signs that you may be experiencing TMJ disorder include:
Acupuncture contributes to muscle relaxation and can help reduce muscle spasms in the TMJ. At templ™ we treat TMJ disorder by inserting acupuncture needles around the face, ear, and jaw, as well as the trigger points of a group of masticatory muscles that help us chew and grind food. In this way, we enhance muscle activity responsible for opening and closing of the jaw.
Acupuncture has been proven as a highly effective method of treating TMD because of its ability to address its root causes. It works by reducing stress, relieving pain and inflammation, as well as relaxing the muscles of the face and jaw.
Acupuncture comes with various benefits including:
If you constantly experience pain or tenderness in your jaw or have problems opening or closing your jaw completely, our TMJ pain acupuncture specialist is more than happy to discuss possible causes and treatments for your problem.
