Combat Stress With These Simple Techniques!

Whitney Anne • March 23, 2022

As Stress Awareness Month comes to a close, take advantage of these helpful strategies to reduce anxiety and bring on the calm!

This would not be an Acushen blog post if we did not mention ACUPUNCTURE. If you are an active member of the Acushen community and currently reading this blog - there is a good chance you are already in the know! If you are new to the Acushen fam and the world of holistic medicine, this is a perfect starting point (excuse the pun). Check out Dr. Sarah Anzola's brief demonstration below as she guides us through a few of the benefits of acupuncture as it relates to stress. The goal is to activate the PNS (REFRESHER ALERT: The Parasympathetic Nervous System is the part of your nervous system responsible for the rest and digestive function within your body. When your PNS is activated, it produces a calm, relaxed feeling in your mind and body). Bring on those endorphins!

VIDEO 1: DR. ANZOLA PUTS ON THE PRESSURE

If you need a quick fix for at home or in between office meetings - tapping (also known as psychological acupressure) is a technique you can try anywhere, anytime, like right now! This method is great to help balance out your energy system and help prevent negative emotions such as anxiety. It can also be an effective tool in addressing post-traumatic stress disorder. Tapping focuses on your meridian points as acupuncture does, using finger tip pressure to apply healthy pressure. Catch Dr. A and Nathalie below for an easy-to-follow stress de-tox sesh!

VIDEO 2: TAP TAP, TAP IT OUT

You have heard it before, and we will say it again...also very helpful in aiding with stress relief, MOVEMENT. Simple and powerful. Even just five minutes of movement can help re-shape your perspective on a bad day. Yoga is one of the best examples and one you can do pretty much anywhere, yes, even at work (we highly encourage it). Practicing yoga will help enhance your mood and overall well-being (there are plenty of scientific studies to back yoga as a method for stress relief - but who needs science when you can try it and get instant feedback). Get your breath and energy flowing with this short and sweet demo below as Acushen's own Alexis Musso shares a few of her favorite yoga poses to help activate the PNS and your rest/digest. If you prefer to practice as a community - remember Acushen hosts gentle garden flow classes the first, third, and last Wednesday of each month!

VIDEO 3: A LITTLE YOGA GOES A LONG WAY

JUST IN CASE YOU MISSED THIS MONTH'S EDITION OF WHAT’S THE POINT???

This Month’s Acu-Point: Ren 17 "Tan Zhong"

"Chest Center," Tan Zhong is a powerful point for heart health in traditional Chinese medicine. It is also an excellent point for releasing anxiety and fear, and it is useful for preventing acid reflux. The point is located in the center of the breastbone, at the fourth intercostal space (the space between the ribs), which is usually at the level of the nipples in men.

To stimulate this point, use the tips of your fingers to gently tap the center of your chest at this point to release any tension and break up chi stagnation. You can tap this point for three-five minutes while taking deep breaths to feel more relaxed.

How Practices From BOTH Hemispheres Help To Promote A Healthier Mind The clock reads 3:00 a.m. and I am wide awake. I toss and turn, anxiety flooding my senses. I am somehow both exhausted and restless. By the time sleep finally defeats my senses, my alarm blares and it is back to the harsh reality of a new day. The thought of getting myself up and completing even the most miniscule of tasks seems overwhelmingly daunting. I ask myself, how will I make it through the day feeling this way? How can I possibly move myself from my bed? The answer is somewhere deep inside of me. A small voice sounds off, “get up." And so I do.

This technique is performed with glass or bamboo cups, which are placed on the skin to create suction and influence the flow of energy and blood. Cupping follows the same meridian channels that acupuncture does and is regarded as one of the best deep-tissue therapies available. It is a great treatment option for a variety of conditions including pain, stiffness, inflammation, blood flow, anxiety, infertility, cellulite reduction and even facial rejuvenation.
